Yesterday, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents approved University System Chancellor Hank Huckaby’s proposal to merge Georgia State University with Georgia Perimeter College.

2014 combined enrollment numbers accounted for 53,927 students, which would make the consolidated university the largest in the state, beating the University of Georgia’s numbers by roughly 20,000 students per year.

Georgia State University President Mark Becker will be president of the large university, once the two are combined.

But this is not the only college merger that has been approved for the state. The University System of Georgia Board of Regents has also approved the merger of Kennesaw State University and Southern Polytechnic State University.

Since its establishment 46 years ago, the Woodruff Arts Center has never seen a grant the size of the one that it was awarded earlier this month.

Top benefactor, the Robert. W. Woodruff Foundation, gave the grant to the Art Center in order to kick-start a fundraising campaign of at least $82 million. The campaign aims to boost the Art Center’s endowment by over $50 million, while investing $32 million in capital improvements. The $32 million in improvements will mainly go towards transforming the Alliance Theater.

Atlanta’s Arts Center is the largest cultural syndicate in the Southeast, and is comprised of four divisions: the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Alliance Theater, High Museum of Art, and Arts for Learning.

Chairman of the Arts Center board of trustees Doug Hertz, says that the grant is an amazing gift because the Arts Center has so many initiatives that it needs help funding. Hertz also hopes that this donation will help encourage other donations.

The donation has helped allow for the reconstruction of the 46-year-old Alliance Theater, and President of the Woodruff Foundation Russ Hardin, says that the goals for the auditorium’s reconstruction were to make the audience more intimately connected with the stage and performances, create artistic excellence, and create a sense of community.

Gwinnett County is proposing a school redistricting plan that will affect thousands of students and urges parents to come to this Thursday’s meeting in order to give their feedback.

The redistricting is set for this fall and will affect 31 existing schools and over 13,000 students. Two of the elementary schools are to be joined with one middle school.

If you and your family are new Atlanta residents and live in Gwinnet County, local moving companies suggest that you attend the local council meetings in order to stay informed on what the correct district for your children will be, so that you can enroll them at the correct school in 2015.

The district proposed a plan that will establish attendance zones for numerous new schools, balance enrollment in existing schools, and discuss plans to create a new cluster of schools within Gwinnett County.

The plan was first launched in early October and has finally reached the stage where it is ready for public comment. Thursday’s meeting will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the district’s instructional center in Suwanee.

If you will be moving to Atlanta during the beginning of December and will not be able to attend the first public meeting, there will be another held on December 18, before the School Board meeting where the Board of Education will be voting on the redistricting plan.

As gas prices reach a record low, Atlanta residents are racing to the pumps in order to fill-up for the holidays.

Crude oil barrel prices dropped from $100 to $80, resulting in lower gas prices across the nation.

The national average has reached a four-year record low, at $2.84. In Georgia, the average price per gallon has plummeted to $2.79.

Georgia resident Deianne Kennedy told Channel 2’s Dave Huddleston that gas prices in metro Atlanta are cheaper than in the Midwest, so she fills up in the big city.

“We love the gas prices down here, because up north they are sky high and when we come down here it’s really, really cheap,” says Kennedy.

AAA spokesperson Garrett Townsend says that his company estimates that 1.2 million drivers will be traveling the Atlanta roadways this Thanksgiving and recommends that unless you want to spend your holiday stuck in traffic, avoid the roads the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and the Sunday after.

An Atlanta lawmaker is motioning to put the topic of legalizing medical marijuana in the state of Georgia, on the discussion table.

Democratic Georgia State Senator Curt Thompson proposed two bills this month.

One of the bills allows for the sale of full plant medical marijuana for people with illnesses in which marijuana is beneficial to their health.

The second bill would allow regulated retail stores to sell marijuana to adults.

If the second bill is passed, the state would tax the drug and use the money to fund statewide education initiatives and transportation projects.

According to Thompson, “You could conceivably be raising $160 million a year.”

Thompson says that families with children who suffer from seizures are pushing for this bill.

It is important to keep in mind the benefits of marijuana when considering legalization and that is what Thompson is calling for.

Thompson says that he realizes his bills will most likely not be passed; however, the goal of the proposed bills is to spark discussion in the state about the topic, “until something passes, as long as it takes,” says Thompson.

The Coca-Cola Polar Bear first made its debut on a French poster, while the animated version graced television sets in 1993.

Another Coca-Cola memento featured in their Christmas exhibit is a 1931 original 6-pack carrier.  This was the same year that artist Haddon Sundbloom created Coca-Cola’s famous Santa Claus.
