Fall is creeping up on us and if you have recently moved to Atlanta, you may have no idea what to do in your new hometown. – College football kicks off September 3^rd-6^th, with Georgia Tech taking on Alcorn State at Bobby Dodd Stadium on the 3^rd. Then, you will probably find your Atlanta movers at the Chik-Fil-A Kickoff Game on Saturday, September 5^th, at the Georgia Dome.

– Dragon Con takes place every Labor Day weekend in Atlanta, so you can expect the locals to be dressed as Storm Troopers and Marvel characters for this 4-day sci-fi convention. Tickets are $150 and there are expected to be over 60,000 attending the convention from September 4^th-7^th.

– Midtown Restaurant Week is one of Atlanta’s top September events that has local foodies already salivating. Over 40 restaurants will be participating and menus will all be priced between $25 and $35 for fixed selections.

– ONE MusicFest has been named “the largest musical art festival in the Southeast” and this year’s lineup includes The Roots, Lauryn Hill, ASAP Rocky, Janelle Monae, Ghostface Killa, and Raekwon.

– Atlanta Streets Alive is an event that all locals enjoy because it helps relieve a small portion of the city’s carbon footprint. On Sunday, September 27^th, from 2 to 6 p.m., a 4.5 mile loop on Highland, North Avenue, Boulevard, and North Highland Avenue will be closed to all motorized vehicles. Even if you do not attend the biking, walking, and skateboarding block party, you should be aware of the road closures in order to avoid them.

Summer is coming to an end! If you have recently moved to Atlanta with your family and your local Atlanta moving company has already finished unpacking all of your belongings, try throwing a barbecue for a fun and casual way to meet your neighbors.

Atlanta chef Tony Mann recently gave Atlanta Magazine tips for grilling ribeye steaks this summer. According to Mann, ribeye steaks are one of the best, if not the best, cuts of meat out there. A ribeye has the perfect combination of meat and fat to add rich flavor and tenderness; however, if prepped poorly, they do not live up to their potential.

Mann’s prepping and ribeye grilling tips are as follows:

• Unwrap the meat and let it sit out on the counter at room temperature for at least 10 minutes
• Season with salt and pepper
• Grill with a charcoal and wood combo
• Don’t press down on the steaks while grilling
• Finish the steak with garlic-thyme butter

Some may question why they should let the ribeye sit out for 10 minutes – a process that Mann calls “breathing.” The Atlanta top chef explains that unwrapping ribeye steaks is “like opening a fine wine, you need to let it breathe.”

Atlanta movers suggest grilling your steaks to the texture of your liking, but Mann says that a total of 10 minutes is ideal. He suggests grilling the ribeye at 45 degrees for 2 ½ minutes, then rotating to 90 degrees for 2 ½ minutes, then rotating to 45 degrees again for another 2 ½ minutes, and finally rotating to 45 degrees again, for another 2 ½ minutes.

Needless to say, once everyone gets a whiff of the delicious steaks being grilled, you will not be able to keep your neighbors away!

Although soccer fans may be rejoicing in Georgia, not everyone is necessarily thrilled about the new Atlanta soccer complex proposal that was passed.

Earlier this month, the DeKalb County Commission voted 4-3 to pass a proposal by Atlanta United FC to construct a $30 million soccer complex. The complex will be located along Interstate 285 just behind the jail. It will include a 3,500-seat stadium, three practice fields, a large team headquarters, and 6,000 square feet of office space.

Interim DeKalb CEO, Lee May, explained that the deal would promote economic growth for the county, stating that, “It’s not about a sports facility. It’s about having a financial investment in a corridor that’s desperately in need. I’m talking about the public good that will be generated because of this public investment.”

Atlanta movers are excited that the soccer complex will be used for youth soccer tournaments, school graduations, and for hosting professional soccer matches starting in 2017. However, there were other commissioners who felt as if the proposal was not a good investment of public money, and a lot of public residents agree. In fact, the meeting denied public comments before the vote, leaving many residents disgruntled and shouting their oppositions.

Hopefully, the soccer stadium will be beneficial to the county’s economy and prove to be a good investment, as promised. If you are moving to Atlanta and have children who love soccer, be sure to stay up-to-date with the stadium’s completion and youth programs that will be offered in 2017.

If you are moving to Atlanta, there is an important aspect of the housing market to make sure that you are aware of; in Atlanta, housing costs can vary depending on the sale of distressed properties. Although many metro areas follow this real estate rule, Atlanta increases the average price of homes more than any other metro in the United States.

Not sure what all of this means? Let’s say that you have been looking for homes in Atlanta throughout the past year. When the time comes to decide upon a home to purchase and to make the move to Atlanta, you may notice that the prices of homes have risen – without any explanation why. If the city is not selling distressed properties at a decent pace, they will raise housing prices a certain percentage in order to compensate for the mortgage costs from said properties.

Over the past year, the average sticker price for an Atlanta home rose six percent. California based research and analysis company, CoreLogic, says that the numbers are expected to continue to steadily increase, reaching a 4.5 percent increase within the next 12 months. Atlanta movers urge house hunters to buy while prices are slightly lower, as CoreLogic does not foresee a decrease in Atlanta housing costs anytime soon.

3. Atlanta Screenwriters Anonymous- Moving to Atlanta and are a huge movie fanatic? Do you love to write your own screenplays? Atlanta Screenwriters Anonymous, founded in 1998, is the perfect social gathering to network yourself and learn more about the screenwriting process.

May is National Moving Month, and although it may be over, the moving season is not and there are things that you and your family should keep in mind this moving season. From April of 2014 to April of 2015, the Better Business Bureau received 30,149 inquires related to moving companies located in Washington alone. During that timeframe, 120 consumers filed reports and even lawsuits against moving companies; the majority of the issue being damaged or missing items.

1. Double check that the Atlanta mover you hire has the proper licensing and insurance. You can check the MDOT and US DOT number online at the S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration: Licensing and Insurance Public website.
2. Reach out to as many moving companies as you can, receiving at least three estimates.
3. Get everything in writing
4. Check with BBB to see the mover’s rating and if there are any complaints filed against them.
5. Download the free Moving Fraud Prevention Guide. Interstate moving companies are required to comply with federal rules and regulations, which includes registering with FMCSA. Go to the FMCSA website and search to see if the movers you received quotes from are registered movers and view their complaint history. Knowing your rights when it comes to moving your belongings is important, so you can take the appropriate course of action if anything does occur, and this site will give you all of the information you need, but All My Sons hopes you won’t have to go this far. If you do not need to move out-of-state, you may still want to hire a mover who is FMCSA registered, so that your move will be properly taken care of.
